Kate worked for 18 years as a reporter chronicling the evolution of digital media and marketing since before the dot com bust. In that time, she shed light on digital privacy concerns, consumer and mobile data collection practices, and even trained a critical lens on how industry addresses gender bias issues.
Kate has appeared on NPR’s On the Media, Weekend Edition Sunday, and the Brian Lehrer Show, in addition to Fox’s Stossel Show and CBC Radio, and spoken at events held by Yale Law School, Harvard’s Nieman Journalism Lab, ProPublica and Annenberg School of Communications. One of the first reporters to track how political organizations use digital advertising, Kate wrote “Campaign ’08: A Turning Point for Digital Media,” a book covering the paid digital media efforts of the 2008 presidential campaigns.
Kate is a member of the data advisory board for The Hive, a special projects unit of USA for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. She’s also a member of the advisory board of Northstar Clubhouse, a mental health recovery program for adults living in the Portland metro area. When she’s not working, she’s an avid music listener, radio DJ, cook, baker, hiker, osprey watcher and baseball fan.
